Jess Kesson's VFX Practical Work from Year 1 HND: Creative Media (Games, Animation and VFX)

For our Game Project, we had to come up with a concept for a game, keeping to our year’s theme of ‘The Tower that Never Was.’ To do this, we went through idea generation techniques and various iterations of our ideas before condensing these ideas down into Game Design Documents.

A Game Design Document is a document that is produced so that all members of a game production team would be given in order to understand what they’re creating, and how the final product is expected to look and play.

Here is my Game Design Document, for the game The Archmage’s Apprentice. For a PDF version, click below:

The Archmage’s Apprentice has gone through several iterations, originally being a game in which the player had to follow a recipe to create a potion in order to defeat an evil Archmage, with three different levels of difficulty. However, I stripped it back to just be a simple potion mixing game due to time constraints.

With the Game Design Document completed, the next thing to do was create a working demo of the game in Unity, which is the engine we learned to use. This Game Design Document was an integral part of another project, which will be highlighted in another post.
