Jess Kesson's 3D Assets from Year 1 HND: Creative Media (Games, Animation and VFX)

Updated: Dec 5, 2021

Over the first year of our HND, we had many projects to complete. These projects all shared the theme of: ‘The Tower that Never Was’. This theme was based on The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, which naturally gave us some interesting units.

Our 3D Unit included the creation of a Revolver, a Door, and a Tower; three key items/settings that are important to The Dark Tower series. These models were made with Autodesk Maya.

The first model I created was this Revolver. I modelled it from reference, which I had previously gathered whilst planning the model. I have previous experience with Maya, but all the skills I needed in order to create this model were taught at the beginning of our modelling journeys.

The second model I created was the Tower. Since this one wasn’t required to complete the project, this model was highly experimental. It was based mostly off of Ypres Cathedral in Belgium, and Hyrule Castle from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Finally, the third model I created was the Door. This was the simplest model I made, and was intended to be used in a VFX shot with someone walking through it. Since this was the case, the doors are two separate objects, which can be rotated open.

Although I had previous experience with Autodeck Maya, the creation of these assets came with a lot of useful skills to model quickly and effectively. We were given plenty of tutorials of how to use the software, which helped us build up our skills over the course of the project.
